I’m Josh, a young(ish) Brit/blogger/English teacher living in Granada, Spain. Since 2012 I’ve been keeping up this blog in an effort to demonstrate to travellers and other would-be expats how wonderful the guiri life really is (‘guiri’ is an informal but not offensive term for ‘foreigner’ in Spanish).
The idea, when I moved to Spain, was to learn Spanish and Spain culture by immersing myself within it. I never thought I’d stay here longer than a couple of years, but in 2016 here I still am. Now I can speak Spanish fluently and would go as far as to say I feel more at home here than I do in the UK (especially since we chose to leave the EU). Spain is no longer an adventure for me; it’s my life.

A Brief Background
Despite wanting to learn another language for a while before coming here, I never had the time nor the proper motivation when living in the UK. But after graduating from university in 2008, a subsequent 4-week intensive TEFL course, nine months in Canada, a brief back-packing stint in South America and another year at home, I finally had my ‘now or never’ moment.
So I found a teaching job online and made it happen.
I spent my first 9 months in El Puerto de Santa María, near Cadiz, where understanding the locals was futile (think trying to learn English in Glasgow or Cornwall). A mid-year visit to Granada sparked an interest and I made it my new mission to find work and live there the following year. So that’s what I did.
Now Granada is my home, and for as long as it suits me I’ll carry on living here!

The Blog: Why ‘Spain For Pleasure’?
The aim of this blog is to promote Spain as a place for young people to come and live. You can find info about travel in Spain, the Spanish lifestyle, tips on learning Spanish, tips on teaching English and the odd rant.
And the name? Well the vaguely kinky undertone didn’t really register until after I’d picked and paid for it. I’ll admit it’s a little weird. I thought I was being clever by adding an ‘s’ to ‘pain’ but then discovered that ‘pain for pleasure’ isn’t actually something people say, rather, the title of a random song by a band I listened to when I was 15.
If you’re not already living here, have why not have a rummage and maybe, just maybe, I’ll convince you to come and see what all the fuss is about 😉
